Our favorite stop for many years, whenever heading to North Shore of Oahu, was Macky’s shrimp truck. Unfortunately, after eating there today, we decided it’s no longer our favorite. Our reasoning: after coming here for a few years on a monthly basis, we began to notice portions were smaller (6 coconut shrimp – down from 7; 8 garlic shrimp in each plate – down from 10) and raised prices from $12.00 to $13.00 a plate. Any additional shrimp will cost you an extra $1.00 (5 extra shrimp = $5.00 etc.) . At first, this did not hinder us from visiting our (ex)favorite shrimp truck! However, the terrible (i.e. rude) service and removal of public amenities were part of the last straw.
Upon receiving our last garlic shrimp plate, the food was cooled off as if sitting out for half an hour before being served. They used to have a public sink with running water and soap to rinse off – now, they only have a party sized hand sanitizer and paper towels. They used to have a dedicated bin for recycling – it has been removed. Their public restrooms (2 porta potties) were open to the public – today, only one is communal. The final decision maker that has veered us away: Handing the cashier a credit card, we were told “cash only” and when asked if it has always been that way she said “yes”. It was an outright lie as we have both used our credit/debit cards here dozens of times without fail. It was the first time we were told cash only. Keep in mind that it was not the owner (who usually rings people up) but instead, a worker.
Overall, please do try it at least once as we both understand that you can’t base an overall judgement of an eatery on one atrocious visit. The good has out weighed the bad over the years but as for Reid and I, we say “Thank you and Farewell” to Macky’s.
