By far one of THE best adventures to go on if you get a chance. Kayaking to “The Mokes” is unbelievable at minimum. It really is hard to put into text how I felt being there for the very first time. For this entry, I will let the experience tell its own story – Photo Diary.
How we did it: We rented kayaks from “Go Bananas” – a shop located in Aiea. The workers will help you attach everything properly – Pay attention! I recommend recording the process because you’ll be tired after a long day of paddling back and forth from the island and may become frustrated or forgetful when it’s time to load back up. Be sure to state where you plan to take the kayak as they will issue a permit for you to be able to leave a commercial entity on the island (Just in case DLNR comes snooping around to charge you up to $10,000 – Yes, 10k! if you do not have a permit).
The Mokes are located on the East side of Oahu. You can either park in Kailua and depart from there or park in Lanikai (as we did) which is essentially a straight shot to the islands. The only island allowed to be visited is the left one. There is a decent sized beach but gets filled up with kayaks throughout the day, so be sure to head there early before the majority! The cove seen in the pictures is on the backside of the island and can be reached through traversing over a rocky coast. The path we took was to the LEFT. Be weary, it is possible to get to the cove going right however, it is very dangerous and longer so if you’re with children or less athletic, the left (facing the island) is the safest – bring foot protection.

Yes, we rented the kayaks and yes they are sit on top kayaks. The ones we used are not inflatable though.
