Summer has arrived! As you thaw out of winter and spring mode and get into the swing summer, there are a few things you can’t forget to bring to the beach:
BEACH ESSENTIALS YOU NEED FOR SUMMER:
Did you know that Hawaii has a sunscreen law banning harmful sunscreen (by 2021). After decades of gross negligence by companies and competent University of Hawaii research, it has been found that “two chemicals contained in many sunscreens, oxybenzone and octinoxate, have significant harmful impacts on Hawaii’s marine environment and residing ecosystems, including coral reefs that protect Hawaii’s shoreline.” When looking for a new sunscreen, for the betterment of the environment and future generations, decide on eco-friendly/reef-safe sunscreen.
Fun fact: Key West, Florida is the second location to ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate.
As Anakin Skywalker poetically said “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.”, sand can be a nuance. Using the wrong material can be uncomfortable and with substandard quality, a family fun beach day can quickly turn into an anxiety attack. To avoid sand sticking to things you don’t want and getting everywhere, we always bring our sand-free towel by Tesalate which is a microfiber technology towel for a sand-free experience! It even stood the test of the finest sand on Oahu: Lanikai.
Into The Wild – Towel for Two: This is the extra large, double-sided beach towel (160cm x 160cm / 63 x 63 inches). It fits two people and they also have a regular size towel. It’s very compact when its rolled and comes with a portable bag.
No hat but good to go with big sunglasses? Hello, Raccoon tan! Avoid unnecessary yet, laughable, face tans by bringing a hat big enough that can provide shade for your face, ears, neck, and shoulders! It may not be the most stylish, but your face and upper body will thank you for not getting torched by the sun’s harmful UV rays. Our go-to hat is this one from Mission. 4. HYDRO FLASK
“WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE, NOR ANY DROP TO DRINK” – lines from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Not all beaches have facilities with access to fresh water which is why having a portable/reusable water bottle is crucial, especially during the high heat of summer. Our Hydro Flasks have been used for years and keep our water fresh and cold!
5. A GOOD READ
Maybe you aren’t much of a beach goer and can relate to Mr. Skywalker. Maybe you’re at the beach because you have to make sure your kids don’t drift away? To occupy the time and develop an intellectual mind, a GOOD read can keep you sane and help you enjoy the day. While others tune to loud music, tuning to an audible book is a great alternative.
In short: safe sunscreen, reliable towel, big hat, fresh water, and a good read are beach essentials any family or individual should consider. This short essential list is will keep you protected, comfortable, and occupied. Mahalo for reading! Are there things that you HAVE to bring each beach day? What are they?
