East Austin after 3 p.m. is one of our favorite food neighborhoods in Texas, because the east side does happy hour like a full contact sport. Within a few walkable blocks of East 6th Street you can hit James Beard caliber tacos, $5 ramen snacks, backyard bars with live bands, and one of the best mezcal rooms in the state, all at deep discounts before the dinner crowd shows up. We built this crawl from our own east side wandering plus current 2026 happy hour menus, organized so you can walk it in one afternoon. One caveat from experience: happy hours change constantly, so glance at each spot’s site before you commit your evening to it.

The route in short: start at Ramen Tatsu-ya at 3 p.m., work east along East 6th through Il Brutto, Hotel Vegas, and Volstead, land at Suerte and Whisler’s for the golden hour, and finish at Lazarus Brewing. The whole strip covers about 0.4 miles (650 m), which means your car stays parked and your rideshare bill stays tiny.
Stop 1: Ramen Tatsu-ya, the $5 Warm Up
📍 1600 East 6th Street. Weekday happy hour runs 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and it is one of the best food deals in the city: $5 full size appetizers and a $4 guava sake slushie called the Guavarito that drinks dangerously easy in the Texas heat. This is some of Austin’s most beloved ramen, so starting here means beginning the crawl with a genuinely great snack instead of a basket of sad happy hour fries. Metered street parking and the Centro garage next door make it the easiest starting line.
Stop 2: Il Brutto, Half Off Everything Italian
📍 1601 East 6th Street, directly across the street. Daily from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Il Brutto cuts half off all cocktails, wine, and beer, which is the strongest drink discount on the strip. The room is modern Italian, the pizzas are legitimate, and a negroni at half price on a patio counts as self care in our book. They validate two hours of parking in the Arnold garage next door if you check in with the hosts early.
Stop 3: Hotel Vegas and Volstead, the Live Music Detour
📍 1500 and 1502 East 6th Street. These side by side sister spots are where the crawl picks up a soundtrack. Hotel Vegas runs weekday happy hour 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with $6 classic cocktails, $3 wells, and $2 Lone Star tallboys, and the calendar leans on local bands and DJ sets most nights. Volstead next door pours $3 wells and $6 classics daily 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in a vintage lounge that feels lifted from another decade. Between them you get the east side in one image: affordable beer, loud guitars, string lights, everyone welcome.
Stop 4: Suerte, the Serious Food Move
📍 1800 East 6th Street. Suerte is one of the most celebrated restaurants in Austin, built on house made masa, and its happy hour is the affordable way in: weekdays 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and weekends 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with $12 signature cocktails, discounts on draft beer and wine, and half off any pour of mezcal, tequila, or destilado. That last detail is the sleeper deal of the whole crawl for agave fans. Order whatever masa dish the bartender points at and thank us later.
Stop 5: Whisler’s, Golden Hour Done Right
📍 1816 East 6th Street, a one minute walk from Suerte. Whisler’s is the east side cocktail institution: creative drinks, a moody stone building, a food truck out back, and the Mezcaleria Tobalá hiding upstairs. Happy hour runs weekdays 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and weekends 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. with cocktails in the $7 to $9 range, which for drinks of this caliber is a quiet steal. If you time one golden hour photo on this crawl, take it on Whisler’s patio.
Stop 6: Lazarus Brewing, the Soft Landing
📍 1902 East 6th Street. Finish at this brewpub where happy hour runs Monday through Thursday 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. with $2 house rice lager, $2 bean and cheese tostadas, and discounts across the beer list. Lazarus brews its own everything, slings legitimate street tacos, and pulls espresso until late, which makes it equally good as a final stop or a sober up station before dinner. The free attached lot also makes it a smart place to end if your designated driver parked strategically.
Beyond the Strip: Five More East Side Deals Worth a Detour
If you have a second afternoon, or you would rather build your own route, the wider east side keeps giving. Nixta Taqueria at 2512 East 12th Street, a Michelin Bib Gourmand pick led by James Beard winner Edgar Rico, runs happy hour Tuesday through Saturday 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. with discounted drinks and half off chips and dips. Hillside Farmacy at 1209 East 11th Street, set in a restored 1950s drugstore, does daily happy hour 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and half price oysters on Monday evenings. Sour Duck Market at 1814 East MLK Jr Boulevard serves a $6 cheeseburger during its daily 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. window that quietly competes with the best burgers in town. De Nada Cantina at 4715 East Cesar Chavez Street discounts margaritas and appetizers daily 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on one of the east side’s liveliest patios. And Haymaker at 2310 Manor Road skips the clock entirely with all day specials every day, anchored by hearty pub food and a deep beer list.
How to Do This Crawl Right
Go Tuesday through Thursday if you can, when every spot on the main route is running its full happy hour and the crowds stay manageable. Eat at every other stop, alternate water like a professional, and remember the east side fills up fast after 7 p.m. when happy hours end and the dinner rush begins. Rideshare in if you plan to drink your way through all six stops; if you are driving, the garages at 1401 and 1621 East 6th bracket the strip. And since deals shift with the seasons, double check menus the day you go.
