We didn’t get around to visiting many beaches while on Maui due to time restraints, but we were able to visit one of the best ones, Makena Beach or more widely known as ‘Big Beach.’ It is a combination of Waimea Bay and Sandy Beach on Oahu. Waimea Bay, in the summer to be specific, because it’s a beautiful placid bay, perfect for a family swim day. Sandy Beach because of its occasional massive shore break which has the potential of paralyzing or killing.

When we visited (May – Summertime), there was a surge in the deep ocean which caused the shore break to be much more dangerous than usual, like Sandy Beach. As seen from above, thanks to our DJI Mavic Pro drone, Makena Beach lives up to its nickname, ‘Big Beach.’ It is 2.4KM/1.2MI of white sand beach and is 30M/100FT wide, providing optimal room for you to be isolated enough from other people.

We visited Makena Beach later int the afternoon just before sunset resulting in the beach being sparsely populated. However, during peak times, parking can get packed and the beach populated with human activity so be sure to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon! For more info, you can visit HERE.

Makena Beach is beautiful and entirely worth the visit if in Maui. Be careful though. Keep and eye on your children and NEVER underestimate the power or size of the waves. According to The Huffington Post, it is listed as one of Hawaii’s “deadliest” beaches.
