As Hawaii based bloggers, we often find ourselves checking out the what’s new on the island such as activities, restaurants, or tours. Recently, we went to the first Agricole rum tour on the island – KōHana Hawaiian Agricole Rum Tour.

KōHana is translated as sugar work/cane work. Opening 3 years ago, the production of the facility was phenomenal. It’s not home to just the creation of rum, but home to 3 acres of abundant lettuce along with 30 acres of sugar cane fields, usually harvested 2-3 times per week. There are 34 Hawaiian sugar canes unique to Hawaii all of which are grown on the property. The process is environmentally friendly as all the used sugar cane is recycled when being grounded up into something similar to mulch.

We were greeted with a pure sugar cane shot, pressed right in front of us. It tasted amazing! We began our walking tour by heading to the aquaponics farm. As the property covers a large area, instead of walking out to the muddy sugar cane fields, we viewed KōHana’s ‘sugar cane garden; where we were showed the different types of local sugar cane used in their rum. It was a rare moment when we saw workers “grinding” the sugar cane for the week’s harvest. Following the process, we entered the distillery where aging and packaging, made-in-house, were the next two steps.

THE RUM TASTING

After the tour, we headed back to the bar at the entrance, where the fun began: rum tasting! We were able to sample five different rum flavors which were individually introduced before tasting. Our favorites were the Koa rum and the Kokoleka rum. To top it off, we were able to taste their delicious rum cake and barrel aged honey. “Sweet” way to end the tour and tasting!

Overall, the tour was approximately 45-minutes to an hour which is $25 per person. At the end of the tour, we were given a gift box of two KōHana drinking glasses, included for those who pay for the tasting tour. With the history, tour, and tasting, the cost for the tour is absolutely worth it! Plus, you get a gift to take home!
