After a long work week, we all want to have fun on the weekend. When it comes to fun, most eat fancy dinners, watch that new movie in a theater, go on staycations, anything and everything we spend our hard earned money. Or, maybe you spent a lot on your plane ticket to come to Hawaii and you want to tighten a budget? Did you ever think of going on a no-spend weekend? If not, this is something you should consider if you’re trying to save money. Here are some great ideas to do without spending a dime!

1. GO TO THE BEACH

Hawaii has numerous beaches all over the island, more than 100 beaches alone on Oahu. There’s so many that we’re sure we haven’t visited each one on the isle. When we visit the beach, we usually go to our favorite ones. It would be a great idea to go to some beaches that you haven’t experienced.

3. WATCH SUNRISE OR SUNSET

Chasing sunset and sunrise is one of our favorite past times. Easily enough to see while sitting in traffic, it’s worth every effort to sit and relax to see such a beautiful thing. There are a few places on Oahu that you need to check out for the best sunrise and sunset:

  • Sunrise: Makapuu Beach, Kailua Beach, Lanikai Beach or Pillbox Hike, Koko Head Crater, Sandy Beach
  • Sunset: Makaha Beach, Ko’olina, Waikiki, Ala Moana, North Shore

4. WORKOUT AT THE PARK

Whether or not you have a gym membership, it’s great to change things up a bit. Bring your headphones, speakers, or laptop to the park and play your favorite workout video. For an even better time, gather your friends and family and lead a workout class! Or, my favorite, play a sport in the park; easily accommodating anywhere between 2-8 people depending on what you decide to compete in!

5. LEARN HOW TO SURF

If you have friends or family that surf, ask them if they would like to go to the beach and teach you how to surf. Or if you know how to surf, ask friends or family to see if anyone would like to learn how to surf.

6. CHECK OUT FREE EVENTS

There are multitudinous events going on in Oahu throughout the week, every day. Most of these events are free to the public. Sometimes, there are even free concerts! Here’s a great website for the Oahu events calendar.

7. DEEP CLEAN THE HOUSE

This may not be fun but so beneficial for the whole family! Think about the last time you deep cleaned your house? It’s best to do it on the weekends when everyone is home which means you can assign a room per person. If you have kids that are old enough to help out, even better! After doing a good cleaning around the house, you’ll feel so great – not to mention you’ll be rewarded with a clean environment and provide a healthier living standard for all in the household!

8. GO ON A HIKE

Just like beaches in Hawaii, there are a ton of hikes as well! If you have kids, there are a few great kid-friendly hikes on Oahu! You can even hike to some waterfalls!

9. DATE NIGHT IN

Feeling romantic? Why don’t you and your significant other, plan a date night inside your own home.

  • Dinner + Movie: Make dinner using whatever you have in your pantry or fridge. Then, after dinner, microwave some popcorn and play a movie from your DVD collection or free movies on demand.
  • Play Board Games: Make it a fun night in by playing some board games with the whole family! If you have the monopoly board game, this usually takes a few hours, so it’s perfect for a night in!

10. AT HOME SPA

We love going to the spa! We’ve gone to a few on Oahu and other places we’ve traveled to. These can definitely add up so having an at home spa is the best way to go! Light up some candles, fill up the bathtub, and soak it all it. If your partner is up for it, give a massage to each other to complete your at-home spa.
