“THE BEST INVESTMENT YOU CAN EVER MAKE IS IN YOURSELF.”

1. BECOMING SUPERNATURAL
– Dr. Joe Dispenza
[14 hrs and 6 mins]
One of my favorite authors that effortlessly links the spiritual to the current science field. If you’re a fan of “You Are The Placebo” and “Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself” then you will love “Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing The Uncommon“. “Change your energy, change your life.”
It all sounds too good to be true, that just THINKING about something will actually alter a life’s course. Yet, through Dr. Joe Dispenza’s research, it reveals that it may not all be pseudoscience after all.
The book’s studies included monitoring students who meditate and by analyzing brain activity, revealed incredible findings such as euphoria without drugs or years of pain suddenly “forgotten”. It bridges Science and spirituality flawlessly. Although I’m always open to counter-evidence, I believe Dr. Dispenza’s research is spot on and realistic! Highly Recommend!

2. THE JOURNEY INTO YOURSELF
– Eckhart Tolle
[10 hrs]
The mind manufactures stories most of which are about YOU. The ego builds its identity by stories of external people and situations which is popularly known as “victim mentality.” Are you facing situations as they are or are you imposing your own beliefs on external events?
“THE JOURNEY INTO SELF” reminds us how to be present over a recording from a 4-day retreat by Eckhart Tolle. It can become slow and endearing to read at times but the point is to be.
Be a part of the retreat: I had to backtrack many times and find a place where I couldn’t be distracted and focus on the lessons:
- Lesson 1: What is your relationship with the present moment?
- Lesson 2: Get into your body! Practices for inner body awareness.
- Lesson 3: Using sound as a portal into stillness.
- Lesson 4: A day spent in silence.
- Lesson 5: Questions & answers. Being present, amidst the world.
- Lesson 6: Questions & answers. The power of detachment and surrender.

3. THE CHIMP PARADOX
– Dr. Steve Peters
[9 hrs and 53 mins]
In my never-ending search in understanding the ego, I came across The Chimp Paradox. Similar to Sigmund Freud’s (the father of Psychoanalysis) theory of the id, ego, and the superego, Dr. Steve Peters points them out in more relative terms: the chimp (id), the human (ego), and the computer (super-ego).
As Mr. Eckhart Tolle says “The central core of all your mental activity consists of certain repetitive and persistent thoughts, emotions, and reactive patterns that you identify with most strongly. This entity is the ego itself.” aka the human.
The human negotiates the chimps desires with the outside world, the chimp needs basic urges served, and the computer is one’s drive for moralistic and idealistic standards.
Growing up, we are taught certain behaviors and beliefs. These beliefs we hold determine our actions. We can never eliminate the chimp so it must be tamed. We will always be human but we can re-program our beliefs if we are open-minded to change.
Dr. Peters touches on how to reflect on how far you’ve come and remembered that you are already the person you want to be. Appreciate the journey and accept your chimp.
This book revealed to me how much there is to learn about yourself. Changes take hold over time, not overnight.

This month covered genres of psychology and spirituality. All three books were extremely powerful in their own right and I’ll 100% guarantee be reading all these titles again, maybe even before the year ends. Great way to revive the mind and spirit for 2019! Hope you all enjoy these reads! Mahalo!

#REIDREADS posts are dedicated to books I’ve read via Kindle, physical copy or my personal favorite Audible. I enjoy reading and digging deeper in every way. To level out the consumption, I want to provide something fun value and maybe educational for the reader! Here are my no bullshit-cut-to-the-point (biased) review at the end of every month.
