Santorini, Greece has been on the bucket list for a very long time. The amazing view, white buildings, blue domes, and luxury hotels with infinity pools, what a dream destination! I did not take it for a place with one of the most amazing foods I’ve ever tasted! We ate at numerous restaurants and tasted a ton of amazing food and narrowed it down to the 12 Foods You Must Try in Santorini.
1. Kastro Oia Restaurant
Address: Oia 847 02, Greece
After eating at a number of restaurants in Oia, Greece, Kastro Oia Restaurant was our absolute favorite place to dine. The food and service were so amazing that we made a reservation twice. The outdoor dining also overlooks Amoudi Bay from the top and has the best sunset view out of all the restaurants in Oia. We could not pick a favorite dish from the restaurant as all of the dishes we tasted were impeccable.
2. Iced Coffee
Santorini is the place to remember when it comes to iced coffee. Our first night in Oia, a few of us ordered iced coffee and it became an everyday craving. Iced coffee is not hard to find around Greece and every place we had it from was delicious. It’s creamy and the caffeine is strong, just the way it’s supposed to be. This specific iced coffee has vanilla ice cream in it!
3. Greek Salad
A staple salad and offered on every restaurant menu. When it comes to the feta cheese, they are more than generous. A Greek salad is typically made of tomato, cucumber, onions, olives, capers, feta cheese, oregano, peppers olive oil.
Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, baklava is a favorite. This is another food that is offered at every corner in Greece. Every place we went had their own way of making baklava and it was either perfect or great. Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey.
Greeks cherish their locally produced tomatoes and make tomato keftedes aka Tomato Fritters. This delicious fried dish is made of tomatoes, onion, and oregano or peppermint.
Another savory pastry that is at every bakery in Greece. Spanakopita is a spinach pie which is made of spinach, feta cheese, onions or scallions, egg, and seasoning. This was my favorite snack during our stay in Oia!
Saganaki is fried cheese in Greece which is very simple to make. This is a delicious appetizer to have!
Souvlaki is a fast food made of tender cuts of meat. Similar to a kebab with lots of special Greek seasoning.
One of the most known dishes is Gyro. This pita wrapped goodness is made of traditional pork or chicken cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Served with tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce.
As mentioned in #9 favorite food, Tzatziki is involved. Tzatziki is a famous sauce in Greece which is made of salted strained yogurt or diluted yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, salt, olive oil, sometimes with vinegar or lemon. It can be served with meat, dip, or topping.
11. Lolitas Gelato
Address: Oia 84702 Santorini Cyclades
While staying in Oia, locals recommended going to Lolitas Gelato for dessert. We went here almost every day and absolutely have no regrets! Every time we went there was a line no matter what time during the day. This gelato spot offers interesting flavors and generous portions. Apostolos, the creator, of the place, was there to serve us and informed us that every gelato flavor is made with pure ingredients, which is the reason for the rich taste!
12. Το Φουρνί – Oia Bakery
Address: Oia 847 02, Greece
A delicious and fresh bakery located in the heart of Oia town. It’s a family owned business and the mother is there to open at sunrise and close late at night. Every morning when we pass by, it smells delicious which drew us in to check out the bakery. They serve multiple pies, baklava, and fresh bread. Definitely a spot for a morning, local breakfast!
